Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Catching Fire is the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy – and in my opinion, it is not as good as the original. I think it relies too much on the same story line, although it is an exciting read and sets up the 3rd book very well.
In this book, Katniss has returned home after winning the Hunger Games alongside her district counterpart Peeta. Ordinarily, only one person can survive the Games…but Katniss and Peeta tricked the system by convincing everyone they were in love, and they both made it out. Now they’re back in District 12, trying to return to their normal lives. For Katniss, that’s complicated because of her confusing feelings for her best friend Gale. However, she is even more distracted by preparing for the Hunger Games 25th Anniversary Quarter Quell, where she and Peeta will have to be mentors.
But it seems like the Capitol hasn’t forgotten about Katniss’s trick during the Games…and they’re going to do whatever it takes to make sure no one else does either.
Soon Katniss finds herself in another battle…but who is she fighting against? And who is she supposed to be? And who does she need to save?
I think this is a good middle book for the trilogy. It drops off a bit in originality from the first book, but it is a page-turner and definitely gets the reader ready for the finale.
