Forge by Laurie Halse Anderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Forge is the second novel in the Chains trilogy (The next book won’t be out until 2014!). Forge, instead of following Isabel, tells Curzon’s story. We find out that Isabel and Curzon find work on a farm, but the man that owns the farm is very mean to them. Isabel and Curzon fit often, so one night Isabel simply takes all of their money and runs away. Instead of chasing after her, Curzon moves on with his life and decides he will not think about her anymore (that proves harder than it seems, though). Curzon saves a young soldier’s life – by accident – and joins a group of militiamen.
Although you hear the stories of just how bad that winter was in Valley Forge, Anderson did a great job of capturing just how hard it was for the men. From the shoe-less men to the fire cakes, she gave us a great picture of the hardships these men went through. I wish that the third book in the trilogy was going to be coming out sooner!
